My friend and I arrived in Cairo with 3,000 Egyptian Pounds, which is about USD$500. We thought that would be plenty knowing that a meal only cost about USD$4 per person, and our hostel was USD$12 per night. You can read the stories on my blog at http://kellygrainger.wordpress.com/travel/egypt/, but in a nutshell, but, by the time we left Cairo (after only a few days), we were wiped out and broke. We ate our last meal at McDonalds and didn’t even have a buck left over to buy a soda!
After 9 years I returned to Cairo, and thanks to a fantastic student guide I could visit all the old Cairo streets and monuments and know more aboutr it than the first time that I did with a group tour.
This time I prefered to visit Egypt by myself, deciding the time to spend in each monument and place and having time to relax. It was a fantastic holidays!!! Cairo have improved a lot the old streets and monuments during last years, and I could see old houses restored and old streets well maintained.
I had the opportunity to visit Cairo, Egypt and it was a wonderful experience, thanks to the tour guide i had which was a guy named Yousef. He was wonderful in taking me to places I had never been before.

cairo isnt as cheap as you may think!!
